Why Others like Sac
SF Chronicle article on why Sac is a great place to live. Most of these points were covered in my earlier post....but they bear repeating. Sacramento is a great place to live despite the fact that housing is ridiculously expensive.
I know not everyone agrees with us, but I also find Sacramento a great place to live. Of course, I originally moved here -- instead of to SF or the Napa area, where family lived -- because it was affordable. All things being equal, I'd rather live in Napa or Sonoma counties, and it was the more affordable housing that was the draw.
Cmyst you are lucky in that your career field is much more mobile than ours.
Unfortuately for me, all things aren't equal so finding employment in places like Santa Rosa (hubbies family is from there)or on the Central Coast where I grew up is near impossible (and both are even more expensive than here).
I moved here when Sacramento was small and affordable. Like Orange county back in the 60s. Now it's like OC in the 90s and not in a good way. The only thing that keeps me here is my job.
If I could move my job anywhere and all things being equal, I'd be in the Portland or Eureka area or coastal VA or NC.
All good choices. Austin is still too hot for me but definately a neat, funky city. I visited there twice interviewing for grad school. I'm afraid it's currently being ruined as every asshat I know now has their heart set on moving there. It's being killed by it's own good press.
No family to weigh us down or children. My husband would vote for anywhere in the pacific northwest. His family is in Chicago still and my family is in OC. They're all in RE businesses or in law so I'm happy to have them far away. The only one I care about is my mum and she's the least wealthy. I've tried everything to get her to move out of that dunghole.

Portland, Austin and Spokane were all places we considered when moving back....but nearby family and friends clinched the deal for Sactown.
